Ivisan, Capiz (September 18, 2024) — The Municipal Agricultural Office of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Ivisan spearheaded the Fish Conservation Day Celebration held at RM’s Events Place, Poblacion Norte, gathering 101 participants from various institutions and fisherfolk associations.
Anchored on this year’s theme, “Sama-sama tungo sa Maunlad at Likas-kayang Pangisdaan sa Bagong Pilipinas,” the event brought together government agencies, partners, and the local fishing community to highlight sustainable fisheries management and the protection of marine resources.
Messages of support were delivered by representatives from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Provincial Fisheries Office, Provincial Bantay Dagat, Provincial Science and Technology Office, and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC). They recognized the crucial role of fisherfolk in ensuring food security while reminding them to adopt responsible fishing practices.
BFAR highlighted the importance of regulating fish sizes, stressing the ban on fine mesh nets and the need to protect spawners, berried or gravid species, and juvenile fish. Meanwhile, PCIC discussed available insurance packages designed to safeguard the livelihood of fisherfolk against unforeseen risks.
Farah Urdelas discusses initiatives under IIRR’s AQUADAPT Project
The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), through Farah Gaud Urdelas, Panay LC Manager, also took part in the celebration. She shared IIRR’s ongoing initiatives in Ivisan, particularly the fisheries action research sites under the AQUADAPT Project, and its potential for scaling up in the community.
Urdelas emphasized the promotion of Nature-based Climate Solutions (NBCS) in aquaculture, citing tilapia culture as one of the sustainable practices being advanced. Information, education, and communication (IEC) materials were also distributed to participants to reinforce these messages.
The Fish Conservation Day Celebration served not only as a venue for raising awareness but also as a platform for strengthening partnerships toward building a more sustainable and climate-resilient fisheries sector in Ivisan.
