GUINAYANGAN, QUEZON, Philippines (August 21, 2025) – Forty-four smallholder rainfed rice farmers in Guinayangan are now equipped with practical, science-based knowledge in nutrient and pest management, strengthening their capacity to improve rice productivity sustainably and adopt climate-smart farming practices.

The Integrated Nutrient and Pest Management (INPM) training, organized by the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) in collaboration with the Municipal Agriculturist’s Office, was facilitated by experts from the DA-Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), including Dr. Mel Olvida, Mr. Wilfredo B. Collado, Engr. Virginia Ompad, and Ms. Maria Sofia M. Canilao.

Key topics included rice plant morphology and growth stages, integrated nutrient management, differences between organic and inorganic fertilizers, integrated pest management strategies, and identification and control of major and minor rice pests.

To reinforce learning, the DA-PhilRice team conducted field visits wih Guinayangan farmers the following day, providing personalized technical recommendations and helping them understand how to apply INPM principles directly on their farms.

This initiative is part of IIRR’s ongoing efforts to strengthen farmers’ capacity, enhance rice productivity sustainably, and promote climate-smart agricultural practices. It also builds on IIRR’s continuing collaboration with the Department of Agriculture through programs such as DA-AMIA and BAR.
