IIRR and CGIAR Advance Seed Conservation Efforts in Nueva Ecija through Farmer Training

Nueva Ecija, Philippines (November 7, 2024) –As part of the FRESH initiative in the Philippines, the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), in collaboration with CGIARR, conducted a training and workshop on seed saving and conservation of indigenous fruits and vegetables (IFVs) in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. The activity forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen seed systems and promote biodiversity in local farming communities.
The training built on IIRR’s earlier engagement with the City Agriculture Office of Muñoz, where selected farmers were introduced to the propagation of indigenous crops. This recent session focused on equipping farmers with practical knowledge and tools for seed conservation, while also providing linkages to potential Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) stakeholders in the area.

A total of 26 participants joined the training, including 21 vegetable farmers, four Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) coordinators, and a representative from the Nueva Ecija Fruits and Vegetables Seed Center (NEFVSC). The Department of Education School District Office was represented through GPP coordinators from Muñoz National High School, Linglingay Elementary School, Licaong Elementary School, and Muñoz National High School Annex. Three of the participating farmers were members of the City Agricultural and Fisheries Council (CAFC) of Muñoz.
Of the 26 participants, 12 were women and 14 were men, with most ranging in age from 31 to 59 years old. Seven participants were above 60 years of age, while one was between 18 and 30 years old.

Through this initiative, IIRR and CGIAR aim to empower local farmers by strengthening their capacity to conserve indigenous seeds, enhance productivity, and safeguard biodiversity. These efforts also contribute to more resilient food systems and ensure that traditional crops continue to play a vital role in nutrition, culture, and sustainable agriculture in the Philippines.
